PCB Serialisation & Manufacturing Traceability
Connecting software, electronics and precision manufacturing.
AVO Invents developed a bespoke software solution to address a critical requirement in electronics manufacturing: ensuring that the unique digital identity stored within an integrated circuit corresponds exactly to the identification physically marked onto its PCB.
The software was developed for an electronics manufacturing application involving Apple Find My–approved technology, where maintaining accurate identification and traceability throughout production was essential.
Digital and Physical Identification
Each PCB contains an integrated circuit holding a unique hexadecimal identifier.
During manufacturing, the PCB also receives a corresponding identification number through laser marking.
Our software was developed to ensure these two identifiers match, linking the electronic identity of the device to its permanent physical marking.
This provides an important foundation for reliable manufacturing traceability and helps prevent identification errors during production.
Manufacturing Process Integration
The project required the integration of custom software with electronic hardware and an industrial manufacturing process.
By bringing these elements together, the system provides a controlled approach to PCB identification and serialisation.
Potential benefits of this approach include:
- Identification accuracy: Ensuring programmed and physically marked identifiers correspond.
- Product traceability: Establishing a consistent link between a PCB's electronic and physical identity.
- Manufacturing quality control: Reducing the risk of incorrectly identified or mismatched boards.
- Process automation: Reducing the reliance on manual identification and checking procedures.
Software Built Around Real Hardware
This project demonstrates AVO Invents' ability to develop specialist software for practical manufacturing requirements.
Rather than developing software in isolation, the work involved understanding the relationship between electronic components, device identification and the wider manufacturing process.
It illustrates our capability to bridge the gap between software engineering, embedded electronics and industrial production.
Development Status
A bespoke software solution was developed to support the PCB identification and serialisation process.
The project demonstrates practical experience in manufacturing automation, electronic device traceability and hardware/software integration.
